An estimated 1 in 15 veterans suffer with substance abuse issues, and they are more likely than civilians to have issues with the over-use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs.
While other segments of the populations mis-use various substances for a variety of reasons, veterans in particular frequently turn to substances like alcohol, tobacco and prescription drugs when coping with difficulties such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and homelessness.
A variety of services specifically tailored to the unique needs and issues veterans face are available for free from the VA including help detoxing, in-facility treatment, individual or group therapy, medications, and other services.
