Family to Family Program – Fall Classes 2018

NAMI Family-to-Family is for families, caregivers and friends of individuals with mental illness. The course is designed to facilitate a better understanding of mental illness, increase coping skills, and empower participants to become advocates for their family members. The course consists of 12 two-and-a-half hour sessions. Trained family members teach the course who know what it is like to have a loved one living with mental illness. The Family-to-Family Program is offered at no cost to the participants.

NAMI Northwoods will offer its NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program for the fall, beginning  September 11, 2018. It will be held from 6:00 – 8:30 at Grace United Church, 535 S 3rd Ave. Wausau, WI

Registration by September 7, 2018, is required.   Note: A minimum of 10 attendees is required to hold the class.  If there isn’t enough to hold the class at this time, you will be notified and a future class will be scheduled.

Please be prepared to attend at least 10 of the 12 sessions.

Sept. 11, 18 – Class 1: Introduction to family education.

Sept. 18, 18 – Class 2: Understanding Schizophrenia and Mood Episodes; Getting through Critical Periods of Crisis.

Sept. 25, 18 – Class 3: Types and Subtypes of Mood Disorders; Borderline Personality Disorder; Panic Disorder, OCD; PTSD; Co-occurring brain and addictive disorders; telling our stories.

Oct. 2, 18 – Class 4: Basics about brain biology and the causes of brain disorders; individual stages of adaptation to the trauma of mental illness.

Oct. 9, 18 – Class 5: Problem Solving Workshop.

Oct. 16, 18 – Class 6: Medication Review.

Oct. 23, 18 – Class 7: Empathy: Inside mental illness.

Oct. 30, 18 – Class 8: Communication Skills Workshop.

Nov. 6, 18 – Class 9: Self-care.

Nov. 13, 18 – Class 10: Rehabilitation: Making choices for recovery.

Nov. 20, 18 – Class 11: Fighting Stigma; Advocacy.

Class 12: Evaluation, Certification, and Celebration.
